The faraway texture filter is a logic switch. If it is on, minified textures (called mipmaps) are used in faraway objects. Thus it is possible to attain a more natural appearance in faraway objects (defocusing). If the switch is off, the basic non-minified texture is used (The faraway objects' surface "granulates").

The manner of the faraway texture filter is influenced by the position of the texture minification filter switch. If the texture minification switch is on, linear interpolation between two nearest minified textures made use of. If the texture minification switch is off, then the nearest minified texture is brought to bear (When changing the distance, the blurring of the faraway textures changes abruptly).

The faraway texture filter can be switched in any object and texture stage separately by the object faraway texture filter command (for an active object and an active stage). If the faraway texture filter switch is off, the faraway texture filter is off in any object, independently of the position of the object faraway texture filter switches of the individual objects. The default setting of all switches is ON.

The manner of the faraway texture filter can be further specified by means of the number of faraway textures and blurring of faraway textures elements.
